Figuring Out Whom You Are, The Teacher said I Must Be Spanish.........

Two of My Nephews That I  Love to Pieces.
My sister was telling me the oldest came home from school
and told her that his teacher wants him to verify what he is.
My sister said What are you talking about?
Well the teacher asked me if I was Spanish,
and I told him no that I was Scottish, Irish, Belgium and African,
and he told me I must be wrong to please check it with your Mom.
Then the young fellow he comes  home with Tan Pride written on his arm,
My sister asks what that is about, well he really was not sure.
Then he says he has a new friend and he is Indian.
My sister explained that their are North America Native Indians
and that there are East Indians.
He looked at her and said, I don't really know for sure
but he is  From Cleveland.
..............
So tonight I was talking to the boys on the phone
and I asked them if there was anything at the school
going on in regards to Black History Month.
I guess there has been some talk about it,
I asked if they talk about Slavery  and Martin Luther King,
A little he said, then he told me he got in trouble with one of the teachers,
and he said he really did not like her, so I asked what happened.
Well his friend Mohammed sneeze and he said God Bless You,
and Mohammed said Thanks and the teacher told my nephew
that that could be very offeensive and he said Mohammed
was not upset, She told him not to say that again.
,,,,,,,,,,,
My nephew said he was Canadian, The oldest one had a
huge display at some thing in the school.
He  wore a kilt and talked about the Irish and Scottish,
He even made green cookies and was a hit.
...........
Somehow my siblings and I all grew up okay,
I think they should let the kids be kids
and I told the boys that all races should be proud
and learn about thier roots, because it all makes
us whom we are today, that we should all love one another as equals,
and that it is very interesting to learn about all parts of the world,
and different ethnic groups.
I told them to treat other people as they would want to be treated themselves,
and that there are good and bad people in the world,
hopefully more good than bad
to love everybody.
One went to watch Basketball, the other to play his keyboard.
They were kids once again.
..........
There will be many more lessons to be learned,
I always wonder if I say the right things to them.
I can only love them the best I can.

  1. You said the right things hun!! And I don't know what else to say. Profiling has become the way of life nowadays! Color of skin; shspe of eyes...as if we can no longer be proud of who we are!! Tis sad!

  4. It sounds as though you did just fine Cinner. I find that sometimes someone besides mom or dad can explain things a bit better to children. For example, I've had my oldest son and daughter talk to my teen when I thought they may have a better perspective than I. So you did good!
    Love Di ♥

  6. Ackkkkk what kind of freaking teacher is that?? I'm offended as a teacher! You told them just the right thing hon!! We live in an area rich with American Indian culture and tribe pride! Not to mention many other cultures despite N. Idaho's reputation as a haven for idiot skinheads..we chased them out by the way. I cannot believe in this day and age that a teacher would be that clueless...go figure hon! You tell them to go on being who they are and comfortable with those around them too!!

I have been so busy the last few months creating and dealing with life.. I have been a poor friend. I am sorry hon..how are you doing! I have missed chatting with you. Hugs and love, Sarah

  7. Indeed, we can celebrate our own heritage and one anothers as well. We've come a long way, but have a ways to go I suspect :) Good thing the kids have you to give them a more worldly view!
